Early puppy training prevents many probelms

This is a question we are asked frequently. Many owners are surprised to learn that not only can they begin training their puppy at 8 weeks, but it is ideal if they do. Puppies tend to learn quickly with reward based methods and can be molded into the dog you want them to be. Early puppy training can prevent problem behaviors such as pulling on lead, jumping and being unmanageable. So what things should you teach your puppy?

Here is a list of what we think are the most important:

• Positions: sit, down, stand, wait
• Come when called
• Walk without pulling on lead
• Be calm in new environments*
• Tolerate being left alone
• Accept all people of all kinds*
• Dog to dog manners*
• Handling of feet, ears, mouth

* Indicates things which your puppy will learn through socialization.

Socialization is getting your puppy used to people, places and dogs, through repeated positive exposure. A good goal for socializing to people is to have your puppy greet at least 40 different people by time they are 5 months old. Take your puppy any place that will allow him. Puppy class is a great way to get a head start on training and a place for your puppy to socialize with dogs and people.
