Research
The first step to feeding raw is to read books and articles, study websites and talk to people about raw feeding so that you will have confidence in your decision. There are many people (including vets) who are willing to tell you everything that is wrong with feeding a natural diet so it is important for you to be able to justify your choice (most particularly to yourself).

Food to Begin With
While variety is important in the long run, we generally suggest a very slow start. Most dogs have previously only been fed one type of protein source or mix for most of their life. So we will start a dog off on one or two proteins (generally Beef and Turkey), then gradually add others after three weeks. This allows you to discern any problems quickly and watch for protein specific reactions.

Amount to Begin With
You need to calculate how much Raw food you should be feeding your pet. The general rule of thumb is to feed 2% to 3% of the pet's total body weight. This is about one to one and a half pounds of food per fifty pounds of body weight. This is a starting point only. It can vary in different seasons, with change in activity levels and as your pet ages.

Supplements to Begin With
While we don't recommend starting your dog on any new supplements right away, we do recommend using a probiotic when you first start to feed raw. We ourselves use and sell Fastrack. A probiotic will help make the transition easy and will keep the good bacteria healthy and doing its job. After you pet is thriving on raw, you can add other supplements as needed.

How to Switch
While some people feel more comfortable with a gradual transition to RAW, many dogs are fine switched straight to Raw with no time of adjustment. If you prefer to switch gradually, it is best to feed a raw meal separate from a kibble meal to allow the pet's digestive system to work optimally for each food type and allow you to monitor the switch more easily. To switch directly (cold turkey), simply gather your supplies and just begin. It's that easy.

Monitor
For the first several weeks of feeding Raw, you should carefully monitor your pet's stools, weight and general well-being. While a dog may require a larger amount of food at the start of feeding Raw, many will need to be tapered down as their body adjusts. It is sometimes surprising how little a dog needs to thrive on Raw. Feeding amounts are not 'set in stone' but should be modified periodically to suit the individual.
