Training Classes at A Place for Paws

One On One Training

Why One on One Training?
The cornerstone of our training program is our One on One training. We have found that the quickest and easiest way to teach the basics or do any kind of problem solving is to teach it with only one or two dogs per instructor to limit the distractions. Once the dog has mastered the first steps, a group class such as Beyond the Basics is a wonderful way to continue their education. One on One training gives the owners a chance to really understand and enjoy the process of training their family dog for life.

Yogi - Leave It!

What will we work on?
We can work on a variety of behaviors during your one on one sessions. These could include:
• Attention and Eye Contact
• Getting the basics: Sit, Down, Stand
• Sit for Greeting - no more jumping on family and guests
• Coming when Called
• Moving attention – walking on a leash without pulling, paying attention to owner, and ignoring the other dogs. Then you can teach him anything!
• Wait – sit, down, and stand
• Acceptance of Handling
• Begin Supervised Separation
• Problem solving session for barking, digging, chewing, mouthing, house-soiling, etc.
• Silly pet tricks: Spin, Play Dead, Touch (ring bell, push ball), Leave-it (treats on paws), Shake, and Beg.

Our basic obedience course is offered as a private session with you and your dog and an experienced Paws instructor. Sessions are one half hour long and will be customized to you and your dog. Each lesson will involve a review of your training program, demonstration of what to do along with actively training your pet. All of our training instruction uses positive reward based methods.

What will you work on?
Your sessions will be customized to your dog but can include any of the above as well as more individual problems.

When is One on One training offered?
This training is by appointment so we can set up a time which is truly convenient for you.

Introduction to Training, Dog Socialization, and A Place for Paws

    Plus Playtime and Doggie Evaluations

At A Place for Paws, one of our most sincere hopes is that dogs find great homes and stay in those homes and that their lives and the lives of their families are fulfilling and rich with experiences.

We believe that positive user friendly training and good socialization skills, as well as thoughtful management of any issues will go a long way in helping to make those hopes reality.

Everyone is welcome

Whether this is your first dog, only dog or one of many, we think this one hour class and socialization session will benefit you and your dog.

Those who are new to Paws are, of course, invited to attend but we also welcome any of our current clients to come and listen, watch your dogs play and share the wisdom you have gained while living with dogs.

Each session will include:

  •  A short training session  - Our training philosophy, a  few basic commands and a trick will be discussed and demonstrated.

  •  A brief discussion of Canine Play Behavior

  •  A open playtime session during which we will be pointing out appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, doggy language and calming signals - This is FUN stuff!

  •  Unlimited Q & A though-out the session- not only will you hear from our trainers but from other dog people as well.

PlayTime for Dogs

Our open play session on these evenings are meant to be educational for the people but it will also be fun and tiring for your dog as well. The group will be carefully watched and any dog that is not ‘playing nice’ will be pulled out of play. Through this PlayTime, you should see how much of a mentally positive experience that dog play is for your pet.

Daycare and Playtime Evaluations

While we are watching this session, we can also evaluate your dog for Daycare and PlayDay if you choose. All of our Daycare and PlayDay attendees must be certified by one of our trainers. You can set up a private time to do the evaluation if you like but with evaluations done during these sessions, we will be happy to explain how and why we rate your dog in a certain way.

This is a FREE session. Please call and tell us when you plan to attend, if possible. However, everyone is welcome and if you just decide to drop in on one of the following dates, that will be fine.
