It’s already that time of year again - flea season is right around the corner. It is possible to fight fleas naturally and the keys are getting an early start and being consistent. Starting a flea prevention program will allow the best chance of keeping your pet naturally flea free this year. If your pet’s immune system isn’t up to par, his chances of having flea problems such as infestation and flea bite dermatitis are greatly increased. Switching to a grain free raw diet will benefit your dog’s over all health and immune system, lowering the chances of a severe flea problem. Supplement your pet’s diet with probiotics and digestive enzyme supplements (such as Fastrack). These assist the transport of nutrients throughout the body as well as help break down waste material. Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) help to build a healthy skin and coat which also builds resistance to parasites. Garlic is one of the best known and effective anti -flea herbs. Feed daily one clove per 20 pounds of your pet’s weight. Raw, chopped garlic is ideal although garlic oil or powder will work as well. Supplementing with B-complex and zinc seems to help prevent fleas. Adding Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (with mother) to your pet’s water offers numerous benefits which include building resistance to parasites, battling yeast infections, enhancing digestion and aiding in healthy skin and coat. Fleas spend about 80% of their time in the environment, not on the host animal. A huge part of preventing fleas is keeping them out of your pet’s environment. You will want to vacuum daily and wash the floors frequently during flea season. Wash your pet’s bedding at least once a week in hot water. Outside keep grass cut short and use beneficial nematodes. Nematodes are very tiny worms which kill flea larvae and pupae and can be purchased through some garden supply businesses. Brush your pet vigorously every day. Garlic Powder and Brewers yeast can be rubbed into the skin prior to brushing to repel any fleas which may be on your pet. Bathe your dog every other week in a very mild shampoo during the peak flea season. Use a natural flea repellant spray daily on your dog. An easy and effective spray that you can make yourself requires only a few lemons sliced thin and a few sprigs of rosemary. Lay the lemon slices and rosemary in the bottom of a pot and pour boiling water over the top of them. Let steep for a day, strain and put into a spray bottle. Not only does this mixture repel fleas but it’s also a great natural conditioner which leaves your pet’s coat soft and shiny.
