A list of “must have” items for every dog owner 1. A Crate Crates are indispensable tools for training and management. A crate quickens housetraining, prevents destructive behavior and keeps your dog safe in the car. The crate must be large enough for your dog to stand, turn and lie down. 2. Doggie Seatbelt Since large crates just don’t fit into sports cars, a dog seatbelt is a must have for anyone not using a crate for travel. These seat belts keep your dog from being flung around during sudden stops and prevent your dog from bolting out of the car as soon as the door is opened. 3. Leash and Collar A collar with an ID tag is your dog’s way home if he ever becomes lost. Even the most well trained dogs need to be on leash in most public areas. 4. Clicker and Treats An inexpensive, easy to use training tool a clicker can actually speed up your dog’s learning. A clicker marks good behavior and the treats which follow reward the behavior. 5. Long Leash The answer to the commonly asked question “Every time I take my dog’s leash off he runs away. What should I do?”. A long leash is easily made from a length of clothesline (usually 20 feet or more) with a leash hook attached to one end. This tool allows you to be able to stop your dog from running away and get your dog to come in the house the first time you call. A potential lifesaver! 6. Kong toys This is a chew resistent beehive shaped rubber toy. Although a nice retrieving toy for dogs interested in such things, the real value of this toy is when it is stuffed full of treats. The dog must work at getting the treats out of the toy which provides mental stimulation and saves your belonging from puppy teeth. 7. Training Class A good training class is worth it’s weight in gold! Look for one where positive methods are used and the focus is on pet manners such as our Steps Training Classes. At training class you will learn training techniques which will help you throughout your dog’s life. 8. Relationship A good relationship with your dog is essential to having a well behaved companion. Treat your dog with fairness, patience and understanding with all interactions. With a good relationship will come the focus and cooperation that you need from your dog for any training.
